The Carmel Gallery features artistic woodcarvings by local
Tahoe residents "Whit" & Judy Whitmire. The Whitmires use
unusual wood from a variety of sources to create unique bowls and other
wooden designs. Their bowls are not only objects of art but can be
used
to serve food or hold decorative items.
Several coats of food-safe hard oil are applied to each of
creations to provide lasting protection. Their wooden bowls and
platters are “turned” on a wood lathe. Using tools called gouges
the shapes of the bowls are formed. Artistry determines the outer shape
but skill accomplishes the inner form. Many of their bowls &
platters are inlaid with turquoise.
